NOMADA soaring into town

- NAOMI STOCK NAOMI STOCK IS A FREELANCE CONTRIBUTOR FOR THE EXAMINER.

Following its recent world premiere in Vancouver, Public Energy presents NOMADA, a multidisciplinary performance featuring contemporary Indigenous dance, aerial dance and installation art by Mexican/Canadian Diana Lopez Soto.

It takes to the stage Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Market Hall Performance Centre, 140 Charlotte St.

NOMADA is “a journey inspired by personal stories of displacement, rituals of water, cycles of sustainability and the connections of our bodies to land,” explains Lopez Soto.

“This production is a restorative process and a gateway to connection; an experience that honours the stories of my family; our Otomi and Purepecha ancestry, our contemporary community, history and relationships to the land and culture of Michoacan, Mexico.”

One of the most unusual aspects of the work is its use of numerous large clay vessels — called cantaros — filled with water, beans, corn and soil that are suspended around the stage, connected to each other via a complex counterbalance system of ropes and pulleys. The vessels rise and fall in a choreographed vertical dance with the performer. The design of the cantaros used in the show was a collaborative effort between Gustavo Bernal, a ceramic artist in Mexico, and Canadian ceramicist, Cynthia Cupples, who lives near Uxbridge, Ont. It is crucially important the vessels be strong enough to carry Diana’s full weight as she stands on them in one section of the performance.

Tickets are available on a paywhat-you-can sliding scale from $10 to $50. For information, or to purchase tickets, visit publicenergy.ca or call 705-745-1788.
