ARTISANity Show and Sale returns to Peterborough Square this weekend
Show includes handcrafted items such as beaded jewelry and woven decor items
The Spring ARTISANity Show and Sale, a fundraiser for the Artisans Centre Peterborough, returns to the lower level of Peterborough Square, 360 George St. N., on Friday, from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show features the work of local artisans, all members of the Artisan Centre, and includes handcrafted items such as beaded jewelry, woven decor items, quilted and sewn bags and runners, wooden cutting boards and coasters, gourd art vases and tea lights, pyrography, wood-turned bowls, pens and pepper mills, pottery vessels, felted scenes and animals and sewn-art pictures.
“ARTISANity differs from other sales,” say event organizers, “in that there are no vendor booths. You can wander and look at items, beautifully displayed like in a boutique. A few artisans will be available at the show to answer your questions, discuss techniques and tell you why they love creating what they do.” Admission is free.
Profits will support the Artisans Centre Peterborough, a not-forprofit organization devoted to the preservation and promotion of artisan crafts.
Free parking is available underground at Peterborough Square.

Thomas Alexander Stewart Hay
Historians at Lakefield Heritage Research have been tasked to complete a biography of Thomas Alexander Stewart Hay, one of the first engineers of the City of Peterborough. He assisted in the design of the Peterborough Lift Lock, designed the Smith Street (now Parkhill Road) bridge at Inverlea and was the first president of the Peterborough Historical Society.
“The biography from Trent (University) archives is a great start. However, not unexpectedly, there is much, much more to add to his accomplishments. We are hoping there might be descendants who might have family photos or other memorabilia … that could fill out his story further,” explains historian Gord Young.
Hay was born in Peterborough on Aug. 14, 1849. He was the son of Thomas Hay of Seggieden, Scotland, and Anna Maria Stewart, daughter of Thomas A. and Frances Stewart, pioneer settlers in Douro Township.
Hay married Elise Roux of Montreal and they had two daughters, Frances Isabel and Helen.
Anyone who has information on Hay is invited to contact Lakefield Heritage Research by emailing lkfd_her@cogeco.ca or calling 705745-8572.
