Rotary spelling bee set to return May 4 with students from more than 30 schools
The top spellers in each category, grades 4 through 6 as well as grades 7 and 8, will win prizes
The 10th annual Rotary Club of Peterborough Spelling Bee will take place on May 4, in the Whetung Theatre at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Dr.
“Over 30 local schools will be participating, along with a group of homeschool children who will be sending representatives,” says Rotarian Catherine Hanrahan.
More than 4,000 local students will participate in their school’s mini-spelling bee.
The top two spellers in each division from each school move on to the final bee.
The event will be recorded for broadcast on Your TV and the top spellers in each category, grades 4 through 6 as well as grades 7 and 8, will win fantastic prizes, such as bikes, time at Trent Excalibur Camp, time at Camp Kawartha, classes at the Art School of Peterborough and more.”
The spelling bee starts at 9 a.m. for those in grades 4 through 6, and at 1 p.m. for those in grades 7 and 8, with pizza and goody bags for the kids.
“The Rotary Club of Peterborough Spelling Bee is an incredible and exciting experience for all those involved,” continues Hanrahan.
“It not only encourages literacy but it also gives young people an opportunity to perform under pressure in front of a live audience. It’ sex hilarating and a real confidence boost even for those who don’t place in the top three.”
