Cobourg will lower flags to mark passing of former CAO
Flags across the Town of Cobourg will be lowered to half-mast in honour of the passing of former chief administrative officer and longtime town employee Steven Robinson, the municipality announced Monday afternoon.
“It is with great sadness that the Town of Cobourg share the passing of former CAO Steve Robinson on Thursday, May 2, 2024,” a municipal release stated. “Steve began his 27-year career with the Town of Cobourg in 1982 as the director of finance before accepting the position of CAO in 2000 where he remained for nine years until his retirement in 2009.”
As CAO, he worked under mayor Peter Delanty, supporting council through some of Cobourg’s most revolutionary decisions.
“Once quoted praising Cobourg council for being forward-thinking, two projects Steve is remembered for are the transformation of Cobourg’s harbour, seen as one of the most successful brownfield and harbour revitalization redevelopments in Ontario, and the acquisition of the Northam Industrial Park,” the release read.
Cobourg’s current mayor, Lucas Cleveland, said Robinson will be remembered well.
“On behalf of council and staff, we were incredibly sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Steve Robinson,” Cleveland said. “Mr. Robinson was praised as being an exceptional role model, supportive colleague, and innovative thinker whose name is still regularly spoken in our hallways.
“He helped council navigate fundamental investments that made Cobourg stronger and more prosperous, and we are humbled by his years of service to this community.”
Serving on many boards throughout his career and into retirement, Robinson had a profound mission to contribute to his community and church.
At the request of the mayor and CAO, all flags at municipal buildings will be lowered to half-mast until his memorial service on Thursday.
