- HAROLD HARTSHORNE

When it comes to organizing parades in Prince George, there is only one marshal and that is Harold Hartshorne. He has been the parade marshal of the annual Elks May Days parade in Prince George for 27 of the 29 years he’s served with the Elks.

Along with his longtime commitment to the Elks (he has served as exalted ruler of the Prince George lodge #122 three times), Harold has been with Rotary in Prince George for more than 20 years and has been Rotarian of the Year twice during that time. The highlight of his Rotary service was the collection of used dental equipment, which he then took to Albania and help set up.

Harold’s local volunteer efforts goes back even further than his work with the Elks or Rotary. He was the host chairman of the 1978 Northern B.C. Winter Games, the largest sports event ever held in Prince George until the 2015 Canada Winter Games and he volunteered for that event as well as the director of traffic control and parking at Otway.

Over the years, Harold has served with the City of Prince Geroge’s Civic Properties and Recreation Commission, the South Fort George Community Recreation Committee, the B.C. Sum- mer Games, B.C. Special Olympics, the B.C. Senior Games, AimHi and Rotary Hospice House. He is currently a board director with the Prince George Council of Seniors.

Harold has often joked with fellow Rotarians about his multiple retirements but whether he ever does or not, it appears Harold has no plans on slowing down much on his longtime commitment to community service.
