Spruce Kings slayed in Surrey

- Citizen staff

It was a chance for revenge and the Surrey Eagles seized it.

They beat the Prince George Spruce Kings 4-1 Friday night on the big ice at South Surrey Arena, getting back at the Kings after they lost both games of their series two weeks ago in Prince George.

Desi Burgart had a two-goal night for the Eagles, while John Wesley and Ty Westgard also scored. Layton Ahac was the only King to beat goalie Daniel Davidson, who made 14 saves to notch his second win of the season.

The Eagles had just five shots on net in the first period and three of them beat goalie Evan DeBrouwer. Wesley got it going for the home side, scoring at even strength 7:24 in, and Burgart made it a 2-0 count on a Surrey power play at 10:29.

Ahac, a 16-year-old rookie defenceman, collected his second of the season, set up on the power play by Ben Poisson 15 minutes into the game. But Burgart restored the Eagles’ two-goal lead less than minute later. Thirteen minutes into the second period, Westgard tipped in a shot to cap the scoring.

The Eagles outshot the Kings 33-15. Sur- rey went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Kings scored once on three opportunities.

The win improved the Eagles’ season record to 2-4-1-1.

The Kings (4-2-0-1) move on to Coquitlam to play the Express (0-5-0-1) tonight (7 p.m.), then will travel to Merritt for a Sunday afternoon game (2 p.m.) against the Cents.
