Locals haul medals back from Canada West Open

Tami Goto and Sydney Edgson will be in Montreal in January for the Judo Canada Elite 8 Championsh­ips. Both athletes tuned up for the event with impressive finishes at the Canada West Open in Burnaby last weekend.

Goto and Edgson were representi­ng the Prince George Judo Club and fought their way to gold medals in the tournament. Goto, in fact, took double gold when she topped the U18 girls and U21 women’s divisions at minus 48 kilograms. As for Edgson, she was golden in U16 girls and earned silver in U18 girls at minus 63 kg.

A third local competitor, Asher Young of the Hart Judo Academy, also came home with a gold medal. Young was unbeatable in the U16 boys division at minus 46 kg.

Other medalists in various divisions at the Canada West Open were: Fallon Jones of the PGJC, who took silver in U14 girls minus 57 kg and bronze in U16 girls minus 57 kg; Taylor Schaus (PGJC), silver, men’s U21 minus 60 kg; Andries VanZyl (HJA), silver, boys U16 minus 38 kg; Gabe Paterson (HJA), silvers in boys U16 and U18 minus 50 kg; Linus Frizzell (HJA), silver, boys U14 minus 32 kg; Maxwell Young (HJA), silver in boys U18 and bronze in men’s U21 minus 60 kg; Corbin Hilman (PGJC), bronze, boys U14 minus 38 kg; Kimiko Kamstra (HJA), bronze, women’s U21 minus 48 kg; Ethan Frizzell (HJA), bronze, boys U16 minus 38 kg; Koen Heitman (HJA), bronze in boys U18 and men’s U21 minus 66 kg; Isaac Kamstra (HJA), bronze, boys U-18 minus 50 kg; Brooke Corbett (HJA), bronze, girls U18 minus 48 kg; Tula Moore (HJA), bronze, girls U18 minus 57 kg; and Ioan Frizzell (HJA), bronze, boys U18 minus 55 kg.

The HJA’s Corbett will also make the trip to Montreal in January for the Elite 8 Championsh­ips. Goto, Edgson and Corbett will all be members of Team B.C. for the event, which will feature athletes ranked in the top eight nationally in all the U18 and senior categories.
