Beaudry cracks top 10 in Austrian biathlon
Prince George biathlete Sarah Beaudry has added another top-10 finish to her international resume.
The 23-year-old product of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club finished 10th out of 100 racers in the IBU Cup women’s 15-kilometre individual race Thursday in Obertilliach, Austria.
Beaudry had just one miss in four shooting bouts and crossed the finish 2:43.9 off the winning pace of 43:04.5 set by goldmedalist Monika Hojnisz of Poland. It was the first top-10 placing for Beaudry this season while racing solo.
Beaudry was seventh last weekend in Switzerland while teamed with Carsen Campbell in the single mixed relay and started the season in Norway with a 23rdplace finish in the sprint.
Karolin Horschler of Germany and Elisa Gasparin of Switzerland claimed silver and bronze respectively on Thursday.
Megan Tandy of Prince George finished 18th, 3:59.5 behind the winner, after two missed targets.
In other Canadian results, Nadia Moser of Whitehorse, Yukon, was 26th and Leilani Tam Von Burg of Ottawa was 84th. Tandy was 11th in the sprint last weekend in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, and placed ninth in the pursuit.
Campbell, of Bedeque, P.E.I., was the top Canadian Thursday in the men’s 20 km individual race, finishing 32nd. Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway captured gold in 48:39.0, 4:51.2 ahead of Campbell. Michael Roesch of Germany took silver and Volodymyr Siemakov of Ukraine claimed bronze. Matthew Hudec of Edmonton was 96th and Jules Burnotte of Sherbrooke, Que., placed 107th in a field of 116.
Sprint races are scheduled for Saturday and team relays are set for Sunday.
Meanwhile, in BMW World Cup action Thursday in Annecy Le Grand Bormand, France, three Canadian women posted top-60 results in the women’s 7.5 km sprint to qualify for Saturday’s pursuit. Emma Lunder of Vernon was 34th, 2:07.4 behind sprint winner Anastasia Kuzmina of Slovakia, who finished in 20:59.6.
Julia Ransom of Kelowna was 36th and Rosanna Crawford of Canmore placed 60th to make it into the 60-racer pursuit field. Megan Bankes of Calgary was 63rd out of 93 entrants.
Laura Dahlmeier of Germany and Vita Senerenko of Ukraine won respective silver and bronze.
Today in Annecy, Nathan Smith of Calgary, Brendan Green of Hay River., N.W.T., the Gow brothers of Canmore, Scott and Christian, are entered in the men’s 10 km sprint.
The pursuits are scheduled for Saturday and mass start races are on tap for Sunday. Prince George’s Sarah Beaudry placed 10th at an IBU Cup race in Austria on Thursday.
