UNBC business students hit the road early Thursday morning for a much-anticipated battle of wits at the annual JDC West competition in Calgary.

The 52 students students gathered for a pep rally attended by UNBC president Daniel Weeks and Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall before bussing to Calgary. JDC West is the largest undergraduate business competition in western Canada and brings together business students from 12 universities. UNBC students will be competing in competitions centered around debating, athletics, academics, social and community involvement.

“Essentially we work all year to prepare for this one 48-hour weekend where we compete in areas of academics, socials and debates,” said UNBC cocaptain Sydney Redpath.

Redpath, a fourth year marketing and finance student, is returning for her third competition. She said the challenge of applying her studies in an unorthodox setting is what has brought her back each year.

“I feel that JDC West was probably the best decision I had ever really made in my academic and professional career,” she said.

It’s very challenging, it’s very different from what you get to experience within the classroom but it’s also an amazing opportunity to apply what you learn.”

Winners will be announced at the end of the weekend.
