Beaudry, Tandy racing in Germany

RUHPOLDING, Germany — Johannes Thingnes Boe sealed Norway’s win ahead of France in the men’s 4x7.5-kilometre relay at a biathlon World Cup on Friday.

Boe overtook Antonin Guigonnat of France and Anton Shipulin of Russia and carved out a big lead after shooting cleanly in prone. He needed two spares in standing shooting before sealing the win, 24.9 seconds ahead of France.

Lars Helge Birkeland, Boe’s older brother Tarjei, Emil Hegle Svendsen, and the younger Boe completed the course in over an hour with seven spares. It was the Norwegians’ eighth win in 11 relay races in Ruhpolding.

Overall World Cup leader Martin Fourcade shot cleanly to drag France back into contention with the fastest round of the day, going third after Simon Desthieux and Quentin Fillon Maillet. But Guigonnat was unable to hold onto their lead. France finished with six spares altogether.

Russia finished third, 53.4 seconds behind Norway with four spares, followed by Germany and Austria.

The women’s relay was scheduled for today and Canada is 13th in the start order. Emma Lunder of Vernon will be first out of the gate for Canada, followed in order by Julia Ransom of Kelowna, Sarah Beaudry of Prince George and Rosanna Crawford of Canmore, Alta. Crawford won her first career World Cup medal Thursday, claiming bronze in the 15 km individual race.

Meanwhile, at the IBU Cup biathlon in Arber, Germany, Megan Tandy of Prince George will be start 30th today in the women’s 7.5 km sprint, one of four Canadians entered in the race.

Tandy finished 18th in Thursday’s 15 km individual race. She missed four of five targets in her first shooting bout but shot clean in the next three to finish 16-for20 on the range. Tandy crossed the finish 3:34.9 behind race winner Nadine Herchler of Germany.

Also entered today in the women’s sprint are Megan Bankes of Calgary, who was 15th in the individual race, Bankes will start 54th, Nadia Moser of Whitehorse starts 76th and Erin Yungblut is 84th in the order.

Three Canadians are entered in the 10 km men’s sprint. Matthew Hudec of Edmonton is fourth in the order, followed by Aidan Millar of Canmore (77th) and Carsen Campbell of Bedeque, P.E.I. (83rd).
