Heading into their seventh university women’s soccer season, the UNBC Timberwolves will be bringing some California vintage to the turf in Prince George for the first time.

They’ve signed San Francisco native Sofia Jones, a second-year forward with a nose for the net.

Jones scored 17 goals and picked up 42 points in 20 games last season for the City College of San Francisco, leading the Rams to a 15-3-2 record in her first season as a forward.

“I used to be a defender, but my coach helped me a lot,” said the 18-year-old Jones. “I use my speed a lot, because I am pretty fast. I like to try to get behind the defence, so I hope to bring that to the team.”

Jones met her T-wolves teammates during a winter visit to the UNBC campus.

“The playing environment is awesome,” said Jones. “Everyone is so nice, the technique is really strong, and it’s just fun here. They’re really good players, which was awesome to see.”

UNBC head coach Neil Sedgwick can’t wait to see his newest forward in action on the outdoor pitch sporting a green and gold T-wolves uniform.

“She’s a solid attacking player and I think she will add a different dimension to our team next year,” said Sedgwick. “She could end up in the midfield because she has a great soccer mind. She also has some great attacking attributes and some great finish around the goal, so we are certainly hoping she brings that to the table.”

The third-year coach was impressed with Jones’s attitude and her affable nature.

“She is a soccer junkie,” said Sedgwick. “She absolutely loves the game, and the girls thought she was wonderful. Spending a couple days with her, we really saw her maturity and how much she wants to contribute to the program and to the university. I think this is a great fit.”

Jones plans to finish off her college eligibility with the T-wolves and is looking forward to getting used to her new surroundings when she returns this summer to join a T-wolves team vying for its second-straight U Sports Canada West playoff berth.

“I’ve lived in the city my entire life, so it is definitely interesting to see a different type of lifestyle,” she said. “It was a wow moment, arriving on campus. It was really nice to be able to walk around and feel a part of nature.”
