Seniors should get some help

-

I called the seniors information line and was advised there is no organization to help seniors remove snow from their roofs or areas that can’t be accessed by a bobcat.

This of course would require good old manual labour and a good shovel, not to mention WCB coverage. At 82 and after five hip operations, my shovelling days are over even if I could climb the ladder to the roof. Over the past 20 odd years I have lived in the Hart area and with the help of my daughters and neighbours I have been able to deal with the ice formation that occurs in the area of my roof that have heat and fan vents.

At the moment I am wondering how my roof will deal with the 30 to 50 cm of snow. There was already a couple feet up there. I have heard a lot of talk from government of how they wish to keep seniors in their homes and not clog up the hospital beds or the health care system. That makes a lot of sense to me and to a lot of old timers like me, all of whom can and do vote.

The city must lay off a lot of summer help that do manual jobs or maybe the provincial government could set up an organization that provides work for day labourers and extends WCB coverage to them. I for one would be happy to pay $25 an hour plus a fee to the organization. It is too sporadic and seasonal for a private busi- ness who is less inclined to care about fewer heart attacks and broken bones or WCB coverage for that matter. But, I can’t think of a better way to get my vote and appreciation. Who knows, maybe a local politician might take an interest in our plight. I can remember not long ago when the people looking for short term work would gather outside the Unemployment Insurance office where employers would pick them up. I can still drive a truck and I’ll provide the shovel.
