UNBC recruits Britannia grad
Provincial all-star, honour-roll student, Lucy Guan had a standout season playing high school basketball in Vancouver at Britannia.
The university talent scouts at UNBC were watching and as a result, Guan has been offered a spot on the roster playing guard for the Timberwolves next season.
The five-foot-five Guan used her speed and playmaking abilities to help the Britannia Bruins to a bronze medal in March at the double-A provincial championship and she was named a second team all-star.
“I like to push the pace, and I like to run in transition a lot,” said Guan, in a T-wolves’ release. “Easy buckets are better than hard buckets in half court. I like to shoot, but I really like to make my teammates better.
“I am really excited,” she said during a campus visit to Prince George. “This is a great opportunity for me. I love the community here and the team.
“I think the biggest difference is going to be the physicality. High school girls are on a different level than the U Sports girls.”
Guan, who will study commerce as her major at UNBC, worked out with the team in April and gave the T-wolves coaching staff glimpses of what they can expect when she’s given the opportunity to boost the T-wolves to a third-straight Canada West playoff appearance.
“Lucy’s basketball IQ is beyond her years,” said head coach Sergey Shchepotkin. “When she practiced with our team, she was quick to adapt to the pace of play, and continually found her teammates for open looks. We look forward to working with her over the next five years.”
Said Guan: “Practicing with the team, I can tell the attitude is right. Everyone is positive and everyone is bringing that fire. The team is aggressive, and we like to run.”
