LOFTY PURSUITS

RIDING HIGH ON MAIN STREET APPEAL

- BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

To set the overall mood for the show home at the Majestic on Main project, designer Shelagh Anderson started with three key pieces of furniture.

“A good layout and the right furniture selection often make square footage a moot point,” says the owner of Lofty Living. “I consider the sofa, dining table and bed our basic furniture needs.

“I chose a sofa with clean lines, a bulkier comfortable piece, yet not oversized and light in colour to keep the space feeling open and airy, while paying attention to the size of its footprint.”

With the dining room, Anderson wanted to ensure that a smaller dining table can still have substance and allow for the gathering of family and friends.

Her inspiration for Majestic’s loft bedroom came from the open airy concept.

“By keeping it light and reflective with only a few pops of colour, I did not weigh it down with heavy furniture pieces that would instantly pull your eye away from the features of the main floor living space,” she says.

Meanwhile, once a working-class street, Main Street has morphed into a vibrant, funky and distinct community.

The Main Street corridor remains true to its roots, while attracting some hip new shops, boutiques, galleries and antique stores.

“For Majestic to evoke the Main Street vibe, it was the simple addition of a hint of vintage,” Anderson says.

That epoch element is in the patchwork bedding and the combination of contrasting design styles in a modern sofa and a more transitional dark wood pedestal table that is an ode to Main’s heritage.

“Aspects of Main Street all eclectically tie together by accessorizing in a less is more fashion, which still allow the home itself to shine,” she adds.

Anderson says that rather than create a show suite for a particular market, she looks at the “bones” of the suite to emphasize what works best in a space.

“I work to blend differing styles while keeping furniture pieces understated and transitional in nature,” Anderson says. “I have found that without over furnishing and cluttering, along with simple pops of colour and the strategic placement of items, staging can be used as a strong tool to highlight the unique and/or functional features of a home.”
