Protecting the public was paramount for a B.C. Provincial Court judge sentencing a Surrey man who committed a series of “serious and bizarre” crimes last year.

Dardan Elbasani, 23, pleaded guilty in August to sexual assault causing bodily harm, assault and breach of recognizance. He was sentenced in Surrey Tuesday afternoon to 41 months in prison.

The first incident took place at Peace Arch Hospital on May 14, 2011, where Elbasani attacked a 55-yearold woman in the washroom. As the woman stood at the sink Elbasani came out of a stall and grabbed her from behind. She screamed, pushed him away and fled.

He was released from custody June 1 with conditions that included residing at Visionquest Recovery Society and adhering to a curfew. Ten days later he left VisionQuest and never returned.

The sexual assault took place on June 16, when a 54-year-old woman was attacked during her daily walk through Southmere Village Park in South Surrey. Elbasani punched her multiple times in the face and grabbed her arm.

When she fell, he demanded she perform a sexual act on him. She refused and was punched again in the head.

He was arrested July 23 at a Niagara Falls, Ont., casino.

Judge Donald Gardner said “the true impact has been the emotional and psychological hurt.”
