Three things to watch

-

1 Chiumiento to make statement

Davide Chiumiento has watched the Whitecaps’last two games from the bench as coach Martin Rennie has opted for more defensive midfields. Safe to say Chiumiento isn’t too pleased about that, but he should have his chance to make a statement tonight. If there’s one player who could single-handedly determine the outcome — or, as important, the goal spread — it’s the Italian playmaker.

2 Defence gets makeover

The back four has been a key reason for thewhitecaps’ success in 2012. For the first time this season, Rennie will make major changes. Captain Jay Demerit andy.p. Lee, who’s been their best player, remained in Vancouver. It seems Martin Bonjour will partner Carlyle Mitchell in central defence and rookie Greg Klazura could be in line for his first minutes. Look for Mitchell to be a factor on set pieces at both ends.

3 Great chance for Hassli to score

Will Eric Hassli play? Will he score? It’s a running topic because the big Frenchman hasn’t scored in 17 games. Facing Edmonton would be his best opportunity yet, so perhaps Rennie will see fit to try to boost his confidence, despite the desire for fresh legs. Hassli played 74 minutes in the 1-0 win at Columbus on Saturday. Rennie defended Hassli on Monday, saying he isn’t getting respect from referees.
