Heat beat Marlies in T.O.

The Abbotsford Heat defeated the Toronto Marlies 3-1 Tuesday night in Toronto to take a 1-0 series lead in an AHL Western Conference semifinal series.

Max Reinhart scored his first Calder Cup playoff goal, Chris Breen tallied the eventual game-winner, and Guillaume Desbiens scored into the empty net for Abbotsford.

Danny Taylor, the game’s first star, made 31 saves on 32 shots to earn his fourth straight win in the playoffs

Divers converge

A field of 18 Canadian divers will be challenged this week by athletes from China, Australia, the U.S. and other countries at Montreal’s Olympic Park Pool in the 2012 Canada Cup. The meet, which begins Thursday, is the penultimat­e opportunit­y for Canada’s divers to accumulate Olympic pre qualificat­ion points before a final selection event May 25-27 in Montreal.

Swimmer dies

Norway was in mourning Tuesday after Olympic swimmer Alexander Dale Oen died suddenly from cardiac arrest during a pre-olympic training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Dale Oen, 26, one of Norway’s biggest medal hopes for the London Olympics, was found collapsed on his bathroom floor late Monday, Norwegian swimming federation president Per Rune Eknes said.

Enough is enough

Seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry announced his retirement Tuesday after bowing out of the world championsh­ips in the quarterfin­als at Sheffield, England. Hendry, 43, made the announceme­nt immediatel­y after being thrashed 13-2 by fellow Scot Stephen Maguire.

Edmonton scores

Golf Canada announced Tuesday that the LPGA’S CN Canadian Women’s Open will return to Edmonton, where it was last held in 2007. The Royal Mayfair Golf Club will host the 2013 event from Aug. 19-25.
