Two events are planned for today to honour the memory of a young woman who died last year in a suspected drunkdriving crash in Surrey.

Kassandra Marie Kaulius, 22, was driving home from a softball game on May 3, 2011, when a white van allegedly ran a red light at 152nd Street and 64th Avenue and collided with the driver’s side of Kaulius’ red BMW.

Witnesses reported that the van’s female driver fled, but she was arrested a short time later in a nearby wooded area. She was not injured. Kaulius died at the scene. On April 10, Natasha Leigh Warren, 34, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death and failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm. Warren is free on bail with her next court appearance scheduled for May 18.

To mark the anniversary, a mass will be said at Cloverdale’s Precious Blood Church at 9 a.m.

A candlelight vigil will be held at Sullivan Park, rain or shine from 8 to 9 p.m.

“Such a difficult time right now,” her family said on a Facebook memorial page dedicated to Kaulius.

“We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. It will be such a sad day but appreciate all the love and support!”

The kaulius family has started a group called Families for Justice, which focuses on tougher penalties for those convicted of impaired driving. The petition can be found at: http://bit.ly/hhte4r.
