Your pick of pretty, pastel prom dresses

Brights, pastels and shimmer are in

- BY DEANNA SPAGNUOLO

By now, you’ve combed through Pinterest, Tumblr, malls and magazines looking for that picture-perfect prom dress. The leopards, cheetahs and zebras exhibited in last year’s prom jungle have been tamed and replaced by beaded bodices, tons of tulle and show-stopping shimmer.

Whether you’re more fashion-forward and opt for the daring high-low skirt, or you want to make a sparkling statement with glitzy beading, there are tons of different dresses to choose from this prom season.

“Big trends this season are all that colour,” said Lisa Dibello, associate buyer for prom and party dresses at David’s Bridal. “It’s all about the bright colours like fuchsia, yellow and turquoise, and we’re seeing a lot of neons.”

If colour drama isn’t your taste, there’s another colour trend painting itself across all silhouettes.

“Pastels are big. They’re a more sophisticated look. A lot of celebrities are wearing nudes and blush tones. Pale pink is a big one, and baby blue,” said Dibello.

Another option for the budding beauties is a multicoloured print. “There are floral, water colours and ombrés.”

If you want to put your floral petals to the metal, pair with some metallictoned shoes. But make sure your heels aren’t too high; you want your feet to be equipped for hours of dancing. “For shoes, going with metallic brings out the accents in the dress,” said Dominique Levesque, owner of Dominique Levesque Bridal.

“Skirt drama is big this year. One of the big trends is the high-low silhouettes. Selena Gomez is wearing them a lot. There are chiffon high-lows, taffeta, sequin and printed high-lows,” said Dibello.

For a regal cut to any style prom dress, there is one go-to neckline.

“Sweetheart is definitely the biggest neckline; it’s very flattering on all figures. One-shoulder is also very important. It’s very elegant and the one-shoulder detail usually has a little beading and being. It looks best in long silhouettes,” said Dibello.

“And the necklines always look best when they’re beaded. It gives it that extra special look.”

As far as jewelry goes, the bolder the better — like long dangling earrings.

“They [teen girls] love chandelier earrings, cuff bracelets and long earrings,” said Dibello. “Statement necklaces, something big and bold are great, especially if you’re wearing a strapless gown.”

To top off the prom-pretty look, girls usually crown themselves with an enchanting tiara. But you might want to opt for something different.

“Sparkly headbands or a thin band with a big accent piece on the side are very pretty,” said Dibello. “Flower fascinators are pretty in style right now too, or have it with feathers instead of a flower.”
