A 29-year-old former Canadian resident accused of killing his wife in Toledo, Ohio, surrendered in Quebec on Sunday.

After fleeing to Windsor, Ont., on Saturday morning, Kyle J. Sheppard called police at 5 a.m. Sunday from Saguenay, Que., a small city 200 kilometres north of Quebec City.

Sheppard was being held at a Quebec jail until he could be extradited, said Toledo police Det. Jeffery Clark.

“The extradition process is a lengthy process,” Clark said. “It could be days, weeks or months.”

Toledo police suspect the former Windsor resident of killing Katie Sheppard, who was found dead in her Toledo home Thursday night.

“The cause of death is strangulation,” Toledo police Lt. Moton said Saturday night. “She was found on her porch — an enclosed porch — and she was under a blanket.”

Police say they believe there was an attempt to clean up the crime scene but did not discover any signs of forced entry to the house.

Clark said police responded after receiving a call from Katie’s co-workers when she did not show up for work or respond to their calls.

The suspect has family in the Windsor area, with whom Windsor police say they have been in contact.

According to Sheppard’s Facebook page, he worked for Magna International Inc. in Aurora, Ont. and he has been married to Katie Sheppard since Sept. 20, 2008.
