Good work, cops
Kudos to Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police for standing up for the mentally ill.
Far too many times in the past, tragedy has occurred because police have mistaken someone who is challenged or have been forced to defend themselves in critical situations.
All these situations could have been prevented if the individuals involved had been recognized and treated for their potentially dangerous states of mind.
A larger share of health-care funding must be set aside for treatment for those who suffer from these diseases.
If treated, the larger percentage will get back to leading active and productive lives, saving money for the system in the long term.
Also, freeing up police officers’ time dealing with people who are actually suffering with health issues will save a lot of time and money on policing, which could be allocated to more serious issues such as organize crime or mental health.
