Whites not the bad guy

- Rowan Morse, 23, Vancouver

I found your article on racism extremely bold and I commend you all for having the courage to write about such a“hush, hush”topic. You are right that racism is overtaking our city and our country.

Unfortunately, I felt sick to my stomach after reading this article. Partly from hearing about all the racist behaviour experienced by people in my city, but also because I felt like over and over again you made“white people”out to be the bad guy.

Every story involved a“white” person being racist and hurtful. So in turn, your article itself is racist. Racist toward“white”people.

I know tonnes of“white”people are racist. I read it in your article and I see it everyday. But not all of us are racist and we (white people) experience racism as well.

I went to UBC for three years and suffered equally as brutal racial bullying as any of these brown, Asian, First Nations people, but I can’t talk about it because I’m white and we’re the“majority,”and we’re the only ones who are racist.

That is how I personally feel, and that is how I felt after reading your article. I don’t think any ethnic group is to blame for this racism.

I think everyone needs to be more open-minded and accepting. I think that white people need to learn about all the cultures that are now part of Canada, but I also think that immigrants need to at least make an effort to learn English and learn about the“white”and First Nation cultures.

No one likes to feel like their culture and language is being squashed out and that is why racism exists here.

And thanks again for having the courage to write about this topic. I can’t even imagine the amount of emails and phone calls you guys will receive. Keep your heads up! You’re doing a great thing!
