THE THREE KEYS
1 A Plan B would definitely help
The focus defensively for B.C. is obviously on Cornish but on offence the Lions have seriously investigated ways to jump-start Harris. Last week, Winnipeg made a few big gains by attacking the perimeter of the Stamps defence and it’s worth watching to see whether the Lions will attempt a similar game-plan. Betweentackle run plays have been a disaster this year and if it doesn’t work again tonight B.C. must have an alternative running plan ready to go. The absence of a Plan B will spell certain disaster.
2 It’s simple; play a perfect game
It would be one thing if beating Calgary only required the Lions to stop Cornish but Stamps offensive coordinator Dave Dickenson has a varied arsenal even without injured SB Nik Lewis. WRs Maurice Price and Joe West are established threats. Calgary wins many games by controlling the line of scrimmage. The Lions will basically need to play a similar perfect game to give themselves a chance.
3 Avoid roaming charges on teams
The lone flaw in the Stamps’ game has been on special teams and if nothing else is working it’ll be imperative for the Lions to at least generate field position if not points outright on special teams. Tim Brown got his first career kick-return TD against Calgary last time out. Last week, the Stamps gave up another major to Winnipeg’s Will Ford and are making a change at returner with ex-Pro Bowler Clifton Smith replacing Larry Taylor. No matter who runs backs kicks for Calgary, the Lions can’t let them roam.
