Cuban spy ring member freed
MIAMI — A second member of the “Cuban Five” — a spy ring whose arrests and convictions have caused tension between Washington and Havana — was released Thursday after spending more than 15 years behind bars in the U.S.
Fernando Gonzalez, 50, known to authorities by the alias Ruben Campa, completed his sentence in Safford, Ariz., a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said. Now the Five are down to three.
Gonzalez was turned over immediately to the custody of immigration officials, a customs spokesperson said. A deportation order already has been issued.
