Movie in works based on UBC student’s death atop Los Angeles hotel
Sony Pictures has reportedly bought a movie script based on the death of Vancouver woman Elisa Lam, whose body was found at a Los Angeles hotel last year.
According to the website Deadline.com, Brandon and Phillip Murphy have written a horror movie about a man who is investigating the death of a woman found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel, before stumbling into more nightmares.
The movie is reportedly titled The Bringing.
Lam, 21, was a University of B.C. student when she went missing during a solo trip to Los Angeles.
Her family reported her missing early last February when she hadn’t been in contact for a week.
At first, police suspected foul play in her disappearance. A photo and video from hotel surveillance cameras showed Lam pushing elevator buttons and repeatedly looking out the doors of the elevator.
But on Feb. 19, 2013, a complaint from hotel guests about low water pressure led to an investigation of the rooftop water tanks.
Lam’s body was found inside.
A coroner later determined Lam’s death was accidental and that her drowning was due in part to her bipolar disorder.
