The quest for the Bronze Baby, emblematic of CIS women’s basketball supremacy, has ended for the UBC Thunderbirds at the CIS national championships in Quebec City.

UBC’s Adrienne Parkin hit a threepointer with 1:56 remaining in regulation to tie the game against McGill University at 53-53, but the Martlets outscored the ’Birds 6-4 in overtime to earn a 59-57 win in the national semifinals Saturday morning.

“Offensively, we struggled,” said UBC head coach Deb Huband. Harleen Sidhu led UBC with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Canada West player of the year Kris Young finished with 14 points. Parkin added 10 points. Dianna Ros led the Martlets with 12 points.

“We came into the tournament with high aspirations,” Huband said. “We are very disappointed in how we played today and the result, but the bronze medal is on the line tomorrow and we want to regroup after a little time and try and finish on a winning note tomorrow.”
