Police turn to public for help

INVESTIGATION: Information sought about fatal warehouse fire

- LORA GRINDLAY

Vancouver police are asking the public for information about a fatal fire in an abandoned East Vancouver warehouse.

The fire was reported at about 2 a.m. on April 13 at 955 East Hastings Street. People could be heard screaming inside but firefighters and police were not able to enter because of thick smoke.

Two people were rescued from the second floor but two others, who had been seen hanging from a window of the burning building, died in the fire.

Police are now saying they believe that there was another person who escaped the fire who has not spoken with police.

Property records indicate the building belongs to Strathcona Village, a sold-out condo development by The Wall Group.

At the time of the blaze, a fire department official said it was likely that the two victims were unlawfully staying in the building, which is to be demolished to make way for a new complex.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vancouver Police at 604-717-2962 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
