Lots to do on Canada Day
It may be hard to turn Canada Day into a long weekend this year, but no matter: there’s lots of festivities — fun, food, floats, fish, freebies, families and fireworks — in town July 1 to celebrate our 148th birthday. Here’s a sampling: Surrey Canada Day

The Navy is offering tours of its ships and frigates, including the 100-plusyears-old HMCS Oriole at Steveston’s Ships to Shore event, in North Vancouver (Burrard Dry Dock Pier) and at Canada Place, Prince Rupert, Nanaimo and Campbell River. Live entertainment featuring Hannah Georgas, Tim Chaisson, the Hairfarmers and Watasun, topped off by a 7 p.m. parade and fireworks from two barges, in Dundarave and Coal Harbour.
