Lots to do on Canada Day

It may be hard to turn Canada Day into a long weekend this year, but no matter: there’s lots of festivitie­s — fun, food, floats, fish, freebies, families and fireworks — in town July 1 to celebrate our 148th birthday. Here’s a sampling: Surrey Canada Day

The Navy is offering tours of its ships and frigates, including the 100-plusyears-old HMCS Oriole at Steveston’s Ships to Shore event, in North Vancouver (Burrard Dry Dock Pier) and at Canada Place, Prince Rupert, Nanaimo and Campbell River. Live entertainm­ent featuring Hannah Georgas, Tim Chaisson, the Hairfarmer­s and Watasun, topped off by a 7 p.m. parade and fireworks from two barges, in Dundarave and Coal Harbour.
