A B.C. gangster who escaped a targeted hit last year has died after being found unconscious early Friday.

Jeffrey Chang, 28, was found unresponsive after midnight in Pitt Meadows, said B.C. Coroners Service spokeswoman Barb McLintock. He later died in hospital.

“It’s still a very preliminary investigation,” said McLintock. “We don’t have a clear cause of death.” She said the death doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

Chang was the target of a drive-by shooting in June 2014 at a gas station on East Hastings Street in Vancouver. An unknown shooter in an SUV opened fire on Chang and his girlfriend, Mia Deakin.

Chang, who had connections to the Wolf Pack gang, was shot in the hand and treated at the scene.

Deakin, the daughter of reality TV star Jody Claman of The Real Housewives of Vancouver, was shot in the shoulder and taken to hospital.

Chang was later arrested by police on an outstanding warrant. Police also issued a warning to young women to steer clear of people with gang and drug connections.

Deakin bid farewell to Chang in a photo posted on her Instagram account. The accompanying message read: “Goodbye my darling my love my soul! We will meet again one day soon my handsome man … not one moment will go by that I won’t think about you my everything.”

Deakin gave birth earlier this spring to the couple’s child. She also posted another photo, captioned “best friends,” that shows Chang with his eyes closed and an infant on his chest.
