Ram ramps up the torque
MORE POWER: Fiat-Chrysler says heavy-duty trucks offer the most in segment
Ram’s diesel-powered, heavyduty pickups have a new trump card over their General Motors and Ford rivals.
When the 2016 heavy-duty Ram pickups are fitted with the optional 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel engine, torque has been cranked up by 35 pound-feet over the previous model year.
This means Ram’s heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 trucks will be able to produce 900 lb.-ft. of torque, which is good enough to make it the most torque-rich diesel engine to be fitted on the factory floor to any massproduced pickup, according to FiatChrysler.
In comparison, Ford’s PowerStroke diesel is good for 860 lb.-ft. of torque, while General Motors’ Duramax diesel punches in at 765 lb.-ft.
The torque boost translates to improved towing capabilities for Ram’s HD trucks.
The Ram 2500 and 3500 will be certified to haul up to roughly 18,000 and 31,000 pounds, respectively.
Look for the 2016 Ram HD trucks to start rolling off the production line later this summer.
