First win a big kick for Pfeffer

- FRANK ZICARELLI

TORONTO — As far as first impressions went, Ronnie Pfeffer made a statement.

The kid was far from perfect, but all things considered Pfeffer did what he had to do, executed what was required, and handled adversity as best he could in his CFL debut.

The game was literally on his right foot when the Argos responded to a late-game Saskatchewan touchdown by marching down the field to score their own major with six seconds to go on Sunday.

Nothing in the CFL is ever taken for granted and no extra point is a gimme this season with teams asked to convert from 32 yards out.

Out stepped Pfeffer, who kicked the convert to send the game into overtime, a wild minigame that would require two possessions for each team, one overturned two-point convert when video showed Anthony Coombs crossing the goal-line, one heck of a game as the Argos would win 42-40 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

“It felt amazing,” said Pfeffer, a Laurier product who won a kicking contest last week to replace an injured Swayze Waters. “I missed a few field goals, missed two, and there’s stuff I can fix, but I thought I had a good game for my first game in Saskatchewan.

“It was a hostile environment and the team had my back throughout the whole thing. And that really kept my spirits up the whole way.

“That was exciting. To be able to have that situation and to make your mark in the CFL, first year, first game, just to be able to show yourself, showing what you can do under pressure when it comes time. That was a great moment.”

A moment Pfeffer won’t soon forget.
