This winter, skip the crowds and escape to Squamish

- By RaCHeL BOGUSKi

No lift lines, lean crowds and plenty of room to create your own alpine adventure. You don’t have to venture too far to reach pristine backcountry and the recreation that comes along with it. Here is some of what you’ll find this season in Squamish.

Now open after its annual maintenance, the Sea to Sky Gondola is the Sea to Sky’s newest winter hotspot, offering access to more than 1,214 hectares of backcountry terrain. Adults and kids of all ages and abilities can choose from a wide range of winter activities including front and backcountry skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing plus a lodge that’s perfect for après. The Gondola also has a fourlane tube park suitable for all ages.

One of North America’s largest congregations of wintering bald eagles can be found right here in Squamish at several viewing spots around town. Visit Eagle Run Park for the best chance to view Squa- mish’s most beloved winter residents up close, plus gain an even better understanding of the eagles and the salmon lifecycle through one of the park’s volunteer interpret- ers, stationed every week- end throughout the winter months. For a uniquely Squa- mish experience, book an Ea- gle Float with Sunwolf Raft- ing to see these magnificent birds from the best vantage point ever: the river.

Head off the grid to Garib- aldi Provincial Park where you’ll find 195,000 hectares of glacier-capped mountains, lakes and ancient forests. Areas worth noting are the Garibaldi Neve, a forty-kilo- metre traverse connecting Diamond Head to Garibaldi Lake, and Paul Ridge, which provides easy access to skiers in search of the popular Elfin Lakes Shelter, a thirty-threeperson overnight cabin.

Just fifty kilometres north of Squamish you’ll find over 130 kilometres of beginner to expert ski and snowshoe trails in the Callaghan Valley, home to some of North America’s best Nordic skiing. Ski Callaghan offers classic and backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, biathlon and more. Or, you can stay overnight at the Journeyman Lodge to discover some of the Sea to Sky’s best powder skiing.
