Pickup trucks continue to lead the charge, while the demand for SUVs also exploded

The records just keep coming for vehicle sales in Canada.

With a total of 1.9 million new vehicles sold in 2015, the highest total on record, the auto industry in Canada experienced a 2.5-percent jump over 2014’s numbers.

You can chalk up the sales boom to exploding demand for SUVs and CUVs. The growing segment produced 36.1 per cent of 2015’s new vehicle sales in Canada, up from 32.9 per cent in 2014. Pickup trucks also held their own with 18.4 per cent of new vehicle sales, up from 18 per cent in 2014.

On the down side, minivan sales fell to 4.7 per cent in 2015 from 5.1 per cent the year prior. Traditional passenger cars continued to give up market share as well, now accounting for less than 39 per cent of Canada’s new vehicle sales. Below are the Top 10 vehicles sold in Canada in 2015, according to sales data compiled by Goodcarbadcar.net.

1. Ford F-series

Once again, Ford’s F-series of pickup trucks led the sales charge in Canada, taking the crown with 118,837 units sold. It’s the seventh consecutive year Ford’s pickup line has led all vehicle sales in Canada. This year’s F-series sales were down 5.9 per cent, however, from its chart-topping 126,277 sales figure from 2014, when the redesigned all-aluminum Ford F-150 debuted.

2. Ram pickup

Ram‘s light truck line held onto the No. 2 spot this year with sales of 91,195 units sold, up a healthy three per cent from a year prior.

3. Honda Civic

Honda‘s best-selling compact car continued its reign as best-selling car in Canada with total sales of 64,950, down 1.7 per cent from the 66,057 sold in 2014. The Civic experienced a big jump in December thanks to the redesigned 2016 model, with sales of 4,031 units recorded, an 18.1-per-cent increase over December 2014.

4. GMC Sierra

The GMC Sierra enjoyed the biggest movement up the charts last year thanks to a mid-cycle redesign, with sales jumping a whopping 11.8 per cent from the previous year. A total of 53,727 Sierras were sold in 2015 compared to 48,046 units sold in 2014. This was enough to move the Sierra up from eighth place last year to the fourth spot in the 2015 yearly sales rankings.

5. Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is still Canada’s top-selling SUV, despite a sharp decline in sales in 2015. The Escape recorded 47,726 sales, a drop of 8.6 per cent compared with 2014, when it recorded 52,198 sales, good for fourth spot that year.

6. Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai‘s Elantra just edged out the Toyota Corolla to be the second best-selling passenger car in Canada. A total of 47,722 Elantras were sold, a decrease of 5.4 per cent from a year prior.

7. Toyota Corolla

Sales of the Toyota Corolla were down 3.4 per cent this year, with 47,198 units sold compared with 48,881 Corollas sold in 2014.

8. Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan faced a sharp decline in sales in 2015 with 46,927 units sold compared with 51,759 sold in 2014, a yearly decline of 9.3 per cent. That was enough to send the veteran minivan nameplate down three spots this year, from fifth to eighth. Despite the decline, the Grand Caravan still controlled more than half of Canada’s minivan market in 2015.

9. Chevrolet Silverado

Like its cousin, the GMC Sierra, the redesigned Silverado experienced a healthy boost in sales from 41,959 sold in 2014 to 46,407 sold the past year, a jump of 10.6 per cent.

10. Toyota RAV4

Rounding out the Top 10 is the Toyota RAV4, the second best-selling SUV in Canada. The RAV4 experienced an impressive 15.3-per-cent gain in sales this year, with 42,246 sold in 2015 compared with 36,639 sold the year before.
