the WINE GUY

- JAMES NEVISON twitter.com/hadaglass

Love is in the air, or at least it’s on the calendar. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the talk has, of course, turned to the ways of romance (or rejection thereof). Admittedly, in years past I’ve taken a rather humbug attitude, openly rallying against the Cupid effect that superficially raises the romantic tide one day out of 365. However, this year I’m going to give in to my inner hackneyed, hopeless romantic. So bring on the dozen roses, the boxes of chocolates and the overpriced restaurant meals. The pairing is made complete with three shades of sparkling wine to share for Valentine’s Day.

THE SWIRL: Grapes of Laugh

If all this talk of romance seems a little stultifying, consider some humour to loosen things up. The Vancouver TheatreSports League is hosting its 11th annual Grapes of Laugh on Thursday, Feb. 25 at The Improv Centre (7 p.m., 1502 Duranleau St., Granville Island). The annual event is a fundraiser for VTSL’s Community and Outreach programs and includes a wine tasting, fabulous food, a silent auction and, yes, lots of improv. Tickets are $50. To purchase, go to vtsl. com.
