A s Valentine’s Day approaches, many of us are scrambling to find the perfect gift for that special someone.

The automotive aisle or car dealership isn’t usually the first place people look, but if your significant other is an auto enthusiast, a car-themed item, accessory or experience can make a great gift.

First of all, there’s the big guns — for those who want to go all out, a new vehicle can be a unique and special way to show your love.

If you’re considering buying a vehicle for your significant other, it’s important to consult them first. You don’t have to give away the surprise! However, you must understand what they need and want from a vehicle, and whether they are drawn to any specific makes and models.

It’s also important to consult with the local new car dealer you will be buying from.

If they know it’s a surprise, they’ll do everything they can to keep it that way, including putting the car aside until the big day, working with you on registration and financing, and even ordering a giant, vehicle-sized bow.

Of course, if you want to go a bit smaller with your gift, there are many other auto-themed options.

Add-on auto tech can be a unique way to help your significant other update their ride. Some simple yet thoughtful upgrades include a cassette adapter for older vehicle models, a remote car starter, a backup cam, or other after-market safety features.

Another option is to get them an all-new sound system, or other parts and accessories that will contribute to their dream ride. With larger gifts like this, it may be best to break the surprise so you can be sure you’re getting your significant other exactly what they need.

You also can’t go wrong with anything that will make your partner’s vehicle sleeker and shinier. If they like DIY, try an at-home car wash kit or car detailing package.

If they prefer to have the work done for them, a certificate for dent removal or detailing at their preferred auto shop will make their vehicle look five years younger. Add in a cover to protect their newly refurbished car for a special touch.

Finally, auto-themed experiences are a great option for something the two of you can share.

Race tickets can make for a memorable day out. If you want a more hands-on experience, companies that let you try the race track yourself, or test out a luxury vehicle like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, can’t be beat.

Tickets to the Vancouver International Auto Show happening March 23-27 can also prove to be a pleasant surprise for you and your significant other.

If your partner loves cars, or would even just appreciate some upgrades to their vehicle, an auto-themed Valentine’s Day gift could be exactly what they need. Check out the auto aisle — or your local new car dealer — for ideas and inspiration.
