White Sox place Lawrie on DL with hamstring injury
CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox placed second baseman Brett Lawrie on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22, and recalled infielder Carlos Sanchez from triple-A Charlotte Wednesday before their game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Lawrie, of Langley, has missed the last five games with a left hamstring injury. In 94 games, he’s batting .248 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs.
Sanchez has shuttled between Chicago and Charlotte this season.
Rangers acquire pitchers
ARLINGTON, Texas — The AL West-leading Texas Rangers have made their first move to get more pitching, acquiring right-handed starter Lucas Harrell and left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez from the Atlanta Braves for an infield prospect.
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday Texas may not be done shopping for pitching with the non-waiver trading deadline arriving Monday. He said there are still ongoing conversations with other teams, but didn’t get into details.
Harrell is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Braves since they bought his contract from triple-A Gwinnett earlier this month.
The Rangers sent 2013 first-round pick Travis Demeritte to Atlanta.
Fielder to have surgery
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder will have his season-ending surgery Friday to repair a herniated disk in his neck.
The surgery will be performed in Dallas by Dr. Drew Dossett, who recommended the procedure after seeing Fielder Monday.
Fielder has hit a career-low .212 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 89 games.
Nats sitting out Drew
CLEVELAND — Unable to figure out what’s making Stephen Drew dizzy, the Washington Nationals placed the veteran infielder on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
Drew has played just once in the past week, delivering a walk-off triple to give Washington a win over San Diego Saturday. Manager Dusty Baker said the 33-year-old Drew has been experiencing vertigo-like symptoms and the team is sending him back to Washington for more medical tests.
