Metro breaks October rain day record
FIVE (SOGGY) FACTS: At least it wasn’t the wettest ever 10th month of the year — that happened in 1975
The record-setting rainy weather is forecast to continue into the first week of November, according to Environment Canada.
“There is not much change in sight as we start off the month,” meteorologist Matt MacDonald said. “(October) was definitely dark and dreary.”
197 WET BUT NOT THAT WET
As measured at Vancouver International Airport, preliminary results indicate that 197 mm (7.75 inches) of rain fell in October. According to statistics kept since 1932, that makes it the 10th wettest October. Normally, we’re at 120 mm (4.7 inches). The record is 287 mm (11.2 inches) set in October 1975.
0 (… AS IN DEGREES) WHAT WAS THAT WHITE STUFF ON THE WINDSHIELD?
The only day it was cold enough for frost was the last day of the month’s ‘dry spell’Oct. 11.
28 of 31 AT LEAST WE SET A RECORD
Normally, October has 15 days of rain, but that almost doubled to 28. The previous record of 26 days of rain in October was set in 1967 and 1985.
11.4 GETTING WARMER
The average daily temperature in October was 11.4 C compared to the normal of 10.3. During the day, the temperature hit an average high of 14 and at night, an average low of 8.5. That compares to the daily normal of 13.5 and overnight of 7.
9, 10, 11 WHAT WAS THAT BRIGHT THING IN THE SKY?
We only had three full days in October without rain — a.k.a. with sun — and they happened in a row.
