Rookie Laine pushing toward the next level

- — Ken Wiebe, Postmedia News

It’s safe to say Patrik Laine has been a fast learner, though that hasn’t prevented him from pushing to find another level.

As the second overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft was asked to assess his play during the first quarter of his rookie season, the Winnipeg Jets winger chose to focus on what he needs to improve upon, rather than what he’s already accomplished.

“I have to be better every day,” Laine said before the Jets faced the Boston Bruins. “Not be on the ice every time the opponent scores, just defend well and if I get a scoring chance, I just have to score on those. That’s one thing of the many I can do better.

“If teams are figuring (me) out, I have to try something new and adjust my game to what the opponent is doing. Of course, the opponents are learning all the time and so are we.”

Laine has come as advertised, chipping in 12 goals and 17 points in 19 games going into the game Saturday against the Bruins, averaging roughly 19 minutes of ice time.

He’s also been far more than a one-trick pony, showing there is more to his game than just a shot that’s already all-world and can change the complexion of a game.

“I have confidence, and that’s part of my game. I just have to keep going and keep rolling. The pace is getting better. We’ve played against some of the best teams in the league and I can play well against them. It’s easier to just play and skate.

“Many things are getting easier.”
