Laine setting sights on wins, not the Calder
WINNIPEG — When it comes to the subject of the Calder Trophy, Patrik Laine has remained remarkably consistent.
Of course, he’d be honoured to have his name engraved on it, but he’s spent little time worrying about the race with Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews and the other talented rookies who have enjoyed an impressive season.
Even with the Winnipeg Jets eliminated from post-season contention, Laine insists he’s not shifting his focus to putting up a few more points to try to leave a final impression on the voters.
“I just want to focus on the team. It doesn’t matter if you’re leading the whole league (and) not in the playoffs, I’m still focusing on what my team is doing and how we can improve every day,” said Laine, who has 34 goals and 61 points in 68 games this season. “I want to get five wins, that’s for sure. Maybe a couple of goals for myself, but if I don’t score, I’m not disappointed. I want to play well and hopefully I can still learn something new.”
Laine, who scored the shootout winner in Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils, finds himself one point behind Matthews for the rookie scoring lead.
When asked about his season as a whole, Laine is encouraged by the steps he’s taken.
“It’s been a nice experience for sure,” said Laine. “Everything is kind of new. I’m still learning every day. It’s been a good season for me as an 18-year-old, but next year I hope I can help my team win more.”
