Eau Contemporaine’s deluxe fragrance collection charms

- Aleesha Harris

What it is: The first foray into fragrance by Canadian retailer Simons, Eau Contemporaine sees the brand partner with Montreal fragrance designer Ruby Brown for a trio of scents.

The first round of eau de parfums includes Soie (silk), a floral/woody scent with notes of grapefruit, rose, white tea and bergamot; Coton (Cotton), a fresh scent with notes of mandarin orange, violet leaves and water jasmine; and Lin (Linen), a crisp/musky scent with notes of bergamot, cyclamen and lily of the valley.

“Each scent is linked to essential fabrics of a well-orchestrated wardrobe and reflects the personality of Contemporaine, Simons’ exclusive in-house fashion brand for the modern, sophisticated women,” a company spokesperson said in a news release.

What we think: The idea of creating a collection of scents inspired by textiles and named after a clothing collection had our tester intrigued. Just how literally would these fragrances smell like their inspirations?

As it turns out, they’re close, but also unique enough to keep you coming back for another spritz.

Our tester tried the scent Lin and was impressed by how “clean” it smelled. One spray conjures up vivid memories of smelling a pile of freshly cleaned and dried garments. The overall effect of the fragrance is fresh and pleasant without being cloying.

Fans of original fragrances that boast a clean mix of uncomplicated notes will likely want to spritz on one — or all — of these new releases. Where to get it: Simons; Simons.ca What it will cost you: $55 (for 50 mL)
