NFL shoves back
Marshawn Lynch’s appeal of suspension denied
ALAMEDA, Calif. — Marshawn Lynch’s appeal of his one-game suspension for shoving an official was denied Tuesday and the running back will miss Oakland’s game this week at Buffalo. Appeals officer James
Thrash, who was appointed jointly by the league and the NFLPA, upheld the one-game ban without pay.
Lynch will not be allowed to be with the Raiders until Oct. 30, clearing the way for secondyear backs Jalen Richard and
DeAndre Washington to carry the load for the Raiders (3-4) against the Bills (4-2).
“We’re going to miss him but it’s the next-man-up mentality,” Richard said. “It’s the NFL. We can’t whine about it because if that’s the case we’ll go out this week and end up losing because we’re not being focused. Me and D-Wash are confident in ourselves and the offence and our teammates have confidence in us so we’ll do everything we can to impact the game against Buffalo.”
Lynch was suspended for coming off the sideline during a scuffle in the second quarter and then shoving a game official during Oakland’s 31-30 victory over Kansas City last Thursday night. The ban will cost him more than $100,000 in salary and per game roster bonuses.
EAGLES LOSE PETERS, HICKS
PHILADELPHIA — Staying on top became a little tougher for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters and starting linebacker Jordan
Hicks will miss the rest of the season after being injured in Monday’s 34-24 win over Washington.
Peters tore his right ACL and MCL and Hicks ruptured his right Achilles tendon. Those are two big losses for the NFLleading Eagles (6-1).
“Both of them are obviously significant,” coach Doug
Pederson said Tuesday. “They will be missed.”
The Eagles already lost veteran return specialist Darren Sproles and special
teams ace Chris Maragos to season-ending injuries.
EX-COLTS MATHIS ARRESTED
CARMEL, Ind. — Former Indianapolis Colts defensive star and current assistant coach Robert Mathis has been jailed on a preliminary charge of driving while intoxicated.
Police in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel say the 36-year-old Mathis was arrested on the misdemeanour charge early Tuesday after driving the wrong way on a oneway street and not signalling a turn.
Mathis retired as a player at the end of last season following a 14-year career with the Colts, during which he was named to the Pro Bowl six times. He holds the team’s record with 123 sacks. Mathis is now on the Colts coaching staff as a pass rush consultant.
49ERS SIGN HALL, JONES
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have signed cornerback Leon Hall and defensive lineman Datone
Jones to one-year deals. The 49ers waived defensive lineman Xavier Cooper and released tight end Logan
Paulsen on Tuesday to make room on the roster.
Hall spent a little more than a week with the 49ers earlier this month before being released after not playing a game.
Jones was a first-round pick by Green Bay in 2013. He played 59 games over four seasons with the Packers with nine sacks, seven passes defensed and one fumble recovery. Jones spent time with Minnesota and Detroit this year but didn’t appear in any games.
THOMAS HAS SURGERY
CLEVELAND — Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas had surgery for his torn left triceps, an injury that ended his consecutive plays streak at 10,363.
Thomas was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s overtime loss to Tennessee. The 10-time Pro Bowler had never missed a snap since he was drafted in 2007 before he was forced to leave the field in pain.
The Browns said head team physician Dr. James
Voos at University Hospitals performed the surgery. Thomas is expected to make a full recovery.
