Time to rethink what it means to celebrate Halloween

-

Earlier this month, the world was shocked when Stephen Paddock shot down 58 innocent people and then took his own life. The horror of the Las Vegas shooting seems to have little impact as we move on to celebrate death through Halloween.

I was in Value Village recently and my little brother picked up a toy chainsaw. As we looked at it closer we realized that it had imitation blood splattered all over it. I couldn’t help but think, “What are we celebrating?” Micah Schouten, Langley

Showing face isn’t demeaning

How is having masked customers unveil their faces “demeaning” to women?

When I approach the Canada-U.S. boundary, I remove my sunglasses in anticipation of Canadian and American guards’ need to check my face against my passport photo. As I enter a bank, I respect a posted request to remove my sunglasses, especially when I’m also wearing a hat.

So how is asking a Muslim woman to show her face when she is demanding commercial or public service an attempt to demean or diminish her? Opposition to Quebec’s Bill 62 is mindless, blinkered ideology. Greg Edwards, Delta

Stanley Park is too busy

Re: SKOOKUM music, food and arts festival coming to Stanley Park next September

It was sure nice of Vancouver City Hall and the park board dumping yet another event on the West End without consulting us. Don’t they think we have enough events in the West End?

In the summer, we have an event or some sort of walk every other weekend with road closures and helicopters flying over at 8 a.m. on long weekends. We can’t even get to the beach. We are trapped in; the only way out is to the south.

I have a message for the city and the park board: Go play somewhere else. We have had enough! Don Smith, Vancouver

How about Christianophobia?

Motion 103 in Parliament that opposes Islamophobia is good, as no one should face religious intolerance and persecution. I am curious, however, is there going to be a similar motion to deal with Christianophobia?

In entertainment, media, public policy and attitudes, Christianity is ridiculed and belittled daily, but I’m not sure anyone cares.

Somebody see the (day)light

I just heard Premier John Horgan has been “inundated” with emails calling for daylight-saving time to end. I would ask the provincial government to give the public the actual numbers and from whom and from where this alleged concern is coming. It sure as hell isn’t coming from the majority and British Columbians have to speak up.

The recent change in government doesn’t entitle the NDP to make stupid decisions like this without our separate, 51-per-cent approval, which I doubt they received in those emails.

Doesn’t the new government already have enough issues to keep them busy?

Impeach the ‘boor’ Trump

What a shame that the office of the president of the United States has fallen to such a low point that the president engages in mudslinging with the young widow of an American soldier who was recently killed in Niger.

President Donald Trump’s giant ego is now becoming unbearable. He is no longer the subject of comedians’ jokes, he is a colossal boor, with no regard for anything but himself.

He should be replaced or impeached — the sooner the better.
