VW teases 2019 Jetta ahead of Detroit debut

Sedan will come with 1.4-L turbocharged engine

- STANISLAV NACHEV DRIVING.CA

Volkswagen just released sketches of the 2019 Jetta, ahead of its auto show debut in Detroit next month. While they are just illustrations, the images give us a pretty good look at what to expect from the final production car.

The Jetta’s exterior has been spruced up from its usual boxy shape and straight angles, and now featuring a front fascia that resembles the VW Arteon, which is set to be introduced as a 2019 model, and certain Audi models. The headlights merge with the grille, just like the on the Atlas and Tiguan, and the tail lights resemble the Audi A4. All Jettas will come standard with alloy wheels and LED headlights.

Inside, the simplicity continues with interior lines that tilt dash controls toward the driver. Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit instrument cluster will be available on certain trims, replacing traditional dials. Like more upscale cars, an ambient lighting system will also be offered.

From our brief taste of the 2019 Jetta last week, the car will have a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Exact output hasn’t been finalized, but expect around 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The Jetta will come with either an eightspeed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.

We’ll have full details on the 2019 Jetta once the North American International Auto Show kicks off in Detroit next month.
