Mariners ace injured by line drive

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez was hit on his pitching arm by a line drive Monday and forced to leave his spring training debut.

Hernandez was struck on the upper right forearm by a liner from Victor Caratini of the Chicago Cubs.

The Mariners said Hernandez, 31, would be examined at the team complex in Peoria.

After being hit, Hernandez immediatel­y grabbed his arm and went down to a knee. He then hopped up and walked around in obvious pain.

Red Sox finalize Martinez deal

J.D. Martinez is finally a member of the Boston Red Sox. The fiveyear, $110-million contract that Martinez agreed to with the club a week ago was finalized on Monday.

After hitting 45 home runs in 119 games last season for Detroit and Arizona, Martinez was widely linked to the Red Sox throughout the winter. The Red Sox took extra time to evaluate a right foot injury Martinez suffered last year.

Cepeda recovering from heart problem

Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda has made significan­t progress from a heart problem that left him in critical condition last week. The family said Monday the 80-year-old former slugger is “showing major signs of improvemen­t.”

Cepeda played first base during his 17 seasons in the majors, beginning with the San Francisco Giants.
