Second suspect in custody for beating autistic man in Ontario
The second of three suspects is now in police custody in connection with a vicious attack on an autistic man in Ontario.
Ronjot Singh Dhami, 25, was taken into custody on Monday morning.
Dhami’s lawyer had previously said his client would turn himself in on Monday, but maintained he is innocent.
Dhami, who is from Surrey, arrived at 21 Division in Brampton, Ont. around 5 a.m. Monday and was taken to 12 Division in Mississauga. He was spotted in the back of a Peel police car hunched over, hiding his face.
The first suspect, Parmvir Singh Chahil, was nabbed in Windsor on Friday and returned to Mississauga. His mother and brother — Hardip Padda, 44, and Harmanvir Chahil, 18 — are charged with being accessories after the fact.
Chahil was set to appear in court on Monday morning.
Peel Regional Police Const. Harinder Sohi thanked the public for “keeping the story alive on social media” and asked the public, if they had not done so already, to take a close look at the video in hopes of identifying the third suspect, who is still being sought.
The third suspect remains unidentified but may go by the first name of Jason.
The attack in Mississauga was captured on surveillance footage that has been widely circulated as investigators sought public help in Ontario and B.C. to identify the three men. The footage shows a man seated at the bottom of a set of stairs, putting on his in-line skates just as a trio descends. The three men then suddenly turn to face the victim and punch and kick him for several seconds. The victim can then be seen clutching his head as the attackers walk away.
