Celebrate Spring

Enjoy the Multisport Season in Whistler

- VINCE SHULEY

It begins with “spring ahead,” that time change that suddenly stretches daylight well into the evening hours. Temperatures warm. Snow melts in the valley bottom revealing the hibernating trails and golf greens. Spring is a season of seemingly endless options.

Mountain bikers have been yearning for the snow to recede, closely monitoring local bike trails and converging on any that are clear. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is poised to open as dedicated trail crews push snow and dirt around with machinery and hand shovels. In the meantime, mud becomes the biker’s therapeutic treatment.

Golfers flock to the driving ranges to hone their swings. These lawns are always the first to open, but the full courses are not far away. Momma bears are occasionally spotted surveying the greens—cubs in tow—creating a distinctly Whistler course hazard.

Yet all the while, spring skiing is in full swing. The lower slopes may look a tad patchy, but the alpine terrain is still receiving the regular top-ups of snow. Spring powder days are far from uncommon but sunny days are plentiful. Whether your preference is manicured groomers, a steep couloir or a flowful run through one of Whistler Blackcomb’s five terrain parks, the season is now.

Have you challenged yourself to the Whistler spring multisport trifecta? Start with morning ski laps, transition onto your mountain bike for some single-track, then round it out with a quick round of golf. Then cap the day with a celebratory beverage. Speaking of which...

Spring is also the season of après in Whistler. Patio heaters are rolled away on sunny afternoons and sunglasses replace goggles as the eyewear of choice. From the mountaintop decks of the Rendezvous and Roundhouse to the bustling Village Stroll, there are bars and pubs specializing in every beverage, including (but not limited to) contemporary cocktails, fine wines and boutique craft beer. Many patios treat their patrons to a variety of live music as well.

If this isn’t enough to have you packing your bags, May is also the month of Indulge Whistler. Restaurants all over reveal their spring dining specials, accommodation deals abound and wellness packages permeate the spa centres. After a solid day of spring activities, you certainly deserve it.

There’s no better time than the spring to sample Whistler’s multisport attractions. Why just have the seasonal cake when you can eat it, too? Spring delights await you, just a short drive up the Sea to Sky Highway. See us at whistler.com/spring.
