Trump is ‘devoid’ of compassion, empathy and sincerity
I have to take this opportunity to vehemently disagree with letter-writer Martin Hill. I don’t believe for one minute that Donald Trump is doing the best he can by his country. Everything he does is for him and him alone — it’s purely self-serving.
I realize respect is important. However, in the case of this particular U.S. president, he has shown very little respect for anybody since he took office, including world leaders or anybody who dares to disagree with him. He constantly relitigates the election, and he denigrates the previous president by telling lies about him, etc. I agree that Trump isn’t stupid, but he is a liar, a con man, a racist, a manipulator, and is devoid of compassion, empathy and sincerity. President Trump is a bully
Donald Trump is a spiteful, ignorant, greedy, racist, immoral, narcissistic, lying con artist who has told more than 3,000 lies and counting since becoming president.
His appointees have the same negative characteristics, and are spineless cowards, worried about staying in office, not about their country. The G-7 summit was a good example of how Trump treats Canada, one of the U.S.’s allies. He has no knowledge of how tariffs work, but starts a war on them, which will hurt both Canada and the Americans.
I’m glad that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau drew a line in the sand and refused to be bullied by this tyrant. Trump deserves all the bad press and more. Noreen Atamanchuk, Surrey
Somebody! Stop! The music!
Am I alone in deploring the intrusion of piped music into our lives? Once restricted to elevators, background music has now invaded almost every public space.
Wherever we go these days it’s almost impossible to avoid this dreaded infliction. Enough already! Remember what peace there may be in silence. Alan Morris, North Vancouver
Bad-debt tax, truly amazing
With regard to the recently introduced “customer-crisis-fund” charge on our B.C. Hydro bills, only in B.C. can a company set up a fund forcing its customers to pay for its bad debts. Truly amazing! Michael Preston, Delta
It’s time for a tax revolt
So, in its voracious quest to steal more from the working man, B.C. Hydro has decided to pass on the debts of its delinquent customers to those who struggle, yet still pay their hydro bills. Well, thanks B.C. Hydro, thanks B.C. Utilities Commission, this is happening throughout our economy. There is the new BS school tax, the tax on seasonal homes and now hydro. It’s nothing but stealing from those who work.

Sweden winning carbon war
Sweden launched a carbon tax in 1991 at a rate of about $44 per tonne and has increased it to about $211. During that same period, its GDP increased 60 per cent and CO2 emissions dropped 25 per cent below 1990 levels. Meanwhile, back in Canada, the initial carbon tax is $10 per tonne, increasing to $50 by 2020, while various Conservative politicians fight the tax.

Put a tariff on electricity
As a suggestion, perhaps the federal government should impose a 25-per-cent tariff on all hydroelectric power sold to the U.S. Robin Gibson, Coquitlam
