Ford might make an Edge RS with stick shift

- — Alex Reid

After adding an Edge ST to its lineup of warmed-over SUVs, Ford is thinking about building an even sportier Edge RS, it has been confirmed.

Ford has done more than consider the idea: Ed Krenz, chief functional engineer for Ford Performance, has actually thought up some pieces that could be implemented in the vehicle, including a manual transmission.

In an interview at the launch of the Edge ST, Krenz said an RS version of the Edge “would have to bring more power ... (and) additional vehicle dynamics,” reports Autoblog. com, and “even more aggressive tires, more aggressive suspension setup, active dampers, torque vectoring.”

“I think there is definitely a manual transmission enthusiasts group,” Krenz said unexpectedly during the interview, going on to mention how the Fiesta and Focus ST come with manual transmissions, and how the Mustang has always been offered with a stick shift.

The idea ST versions of Ford vehicles always come with a manual gives us hope that maybe the Edge ST will receive a manual too, and may find its way into a possible RS version.

Krenz said the Edge RS would fill an automotive world “white space” and would “create kind of that segment of non-premium, ultra-high-performance SUVs.”

In a world where Mustangs are getting turned into SUVs and BMWs don’t come with manual transmissions, maybe we need an Edge RS in our lives, just to shake things up even more.
