Porsche expected to price Taycan EV to rival Tesla Model S

- ALEX REID Driving.ca

The Porsche Taycan hasn’t been released yet, but we’re already hearing rumours about what the sale price could be for the fully electric sports four-door.

It’s no question the Taycan is going to be a challenger for the Tesla Model S, but it’s going to have to do more than look better and perform better. It will have to be comparable on price, too.

The going rate for a base model 75 is around $94,650 in Canada, and Porsche told Automotive News the Taycan will be priced between the Cayenne and the Panamera in European markets. In Canada, that means we’re looking at between $75,500 and $97,300.

That’s fairly cheap for an electric sports car built by some of the finest hands in Germany, especially considering the specifications. Taycan will be powered by two electric motors supplied by Magneti Marelli in Italy, which will produce more than 600 horsepower and rocket the car to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds.

The 800-volt battery will take the car 500 kilometres before it needs to be recharged, and Porsche says the Taycan will only need to be fast-charged for four minutes to add another 100 km in range.

That rate is two-and-a-half times faster than a Tesla.

Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke said the company also wants to build a high-performance version of the Taycan that could be priced at as much as 200,000 euros.

In Canada, we can only hope that car will also rival the Tesla P100D’s price of $193,900.
