Bridges brings ho-ho-holiday style
Singer-songwriter says his retro look and sound are inspired by music, fashion greats
Cher, Future, Janelle Monae — American retailer Gap has boasted a long line of music superstars for its recent campaigns.
So it should come as no surprise that this year, they’ve netted another noteworthy name for their Holiday 2018 push: Leon Bridges.
We caught up with the Grammy Award-nominated R&B singer and songwriter in advance of the campaign announcement to talk style, his unique sound and his favourite Christmas memories.
Q How would you describe your personal style?
A
I consider it to be polished and modern but with Western and retro flourishes.
Q And how would you describe your sound?
A
My sound is R&B with classic soul influences. I listen to Sam Cooke, but I also grew up listening to Usher, Ginuwine and now listen to everything from Kacey Musgraves to Migos and Lil Baby.
Q Your look has a cool, retro vibe that’s also very right now. How do you strike this balance?
A
If you don’t like what you are wearing, it doesn’t work; it looks like a costume. So I browse for well-fitting things that I like and then tie it together. I shop everywhere from high-end stores to vintage and work with a stylist, Mac Huelster, for red carpets. I like to look put together.
Q Who or what is your biggest style inspiration?
A I like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Dapper Dan and also the site Street Etiquette. My home state of Texas is also an inspiration for me.
Q You’re the face of Gap’s Holiday Campaign. What makes this a good fit for you?
A
I loved watching Gap commercials in the '90s because they were multicultural and had cool music in them. Gap makes it easy for you to look good and covers your basics. I was so proud to work with a household name like Gap and get to tie fashion, dance and music together.
Q Speaking of the holidays, what’s your favourite holiday memory?
A
After I signed to my label and put my album out, I was really excited to bring back presents from my travels around the world for my family and friends.
Q How would you finish this sentence: For me, the holiday season isn’t complete without ______ .
A
Family. I tour so much, so I make it mandatory to do holidays at home in Texas.
Q How will you be spending the holiday season this year?
A Whiskey and good food with my family.
